A Gamma Seal is a two-part lid. A rim snaps permanently onto the bucket, and a threaded centre screws into it, so what was an open bucket becomes sealed storage you can open and close in a couple of turns. Put your mitts, cloths and bottles inside and they stay clean and dry between washes instead of sitting in a damp bucket in the garage. It seals well enough to hold liquid without slopping, so pre-mixed shampoo or wheel cleaner can live in it. And with the centre screwed down it takes your weight, which is worth more than it sounds when you are working on wheels and arches.

Four Reasons

Why A Sealed Bucket Matters

Your Kit Stops Living In A Damp Bucket
Mitts, cloths and applicators left in an open bucket in a garage pick up dust, grit and whatever else is in the air, and they stay damp. Both of those are how a clean mitt becomes a mitt that marks paint. A sealed lid turns the bucket you already own into a closed box for the kit that goes in it.
Pre-Mix And Leave It
Because the seal holds liquid, you can mix shampoo or wheel cleaner at the right dilution, screw the lid down, and it is still there and still correct next time. No measuring in the cold, no half-remembered ratios.
It Opens In Two Turns
The rim stays on the bucket permanently. Only the centre unscrews, so getting in is a couple of turns rather than prising a lid off a rim every time. That is the difference between a lid you use and a lid you take off once and leave off.
Somewhere To Sit
With the centre screwed down the lid takes your weight. Wheels, arches and lower panels are the jobs that put you on the floor, and a bucket you can sit on is already next to you.
The Design

What Is A Gamma Seal Lid?

Most bucket lids are a single piece of plastic that you press onto the rim and then fight to get off again. They seal reasonably well and they are a nuisance, so people stop using them.

A Gamma Seal is two pieces. The outer rim snaps onto the bucket and stays there permanently. The inner lid is threaded and screws into that rim, so the seal is made by the thread rather than by force. Opening it is a couple of turns and closing it is the same, which is the whole reason the design exists: a lid that is easy enough to use that people actually keep using it.

The practical effect for detailing is that a 20 litre bucket becomes three things instead of one. It is still a wash bucket. It is also a sealed container for the mitts, cloths, brushes and bottles that otherwise sit loose in a garage collecting dust. And with the centre screwed down it is a seat at exactly the right height for wheels and lower panels. Nothing else in a wash kit does three jobs for twelve pounds.

"A lid you have to fight with is a lid you stop using. This one opens in two turns, which is why it stays on."

Honest Assessment

Is It Right For You

Ideal For
Anyone storing wash kit in a garage, shed or van where dust settles
Keeping mitts and cloths clean and dry between washes
Mobile detailers and anyone moving a bucket with liquid still in it
Pre-mixing shampoo or wheel cleaner and leaving it ready
Anyone who ends up kneeling on the floor for wheels and arches
Households short on shelf space, where a stacked bucket is the storage
Works With
Duel detailing buckets · Standard 20 litre buckets of matching rim diameter · Any wash kit small enough to go through the opening
Consider An Alternative If
You do not own a compatible bucket yet. A Duel detailing bucket is £14.00, or £19.95 with a grit guard fitted
You want the bucket sealed with a grit guard still inside. Check that combination first before ordering — it is not currently documented
You only need to keep dust off. A sealed lid is more than that job needs, though it is the only version that also holds liquid and takes weight
Take Care
The rim is designed to stay on the bucket permanently, so fit it to the bucket you mean to keep it on · Do not stand on the lid, sit on it · Do not store chemicals that their own labels say must stay in their original container · Rinse and dry before sealing kit inside, because a sealed damp bucket is worse than an open one
Five Steps

How To Fit And Use It

1
Start With A Clean, Dry Rim
Wipe around the top edge of the bucket. Grit under the snap-on rim stops it seating evenly, and once it is on it is meant to stay on.
2
Press The Rim On All The Way Round
Work around the bucket rather than pushing one side down. It should click down flush the whole way round. On a stiff new bucket, working around it twice is normal.
3
Screw The Centre In
Locate the thread and turn it down until it stops. Do not force past that point. That is the seal made.
4
Check It Before You Trust It With Liquid
Fill with water, screw down, tip the bucket on its side for a few seconds. Do this once, over a drain, before the first time you move a full bucket in a car boot.
5
Open Two Turns, Not Off Entirely
For getting kit in and out, the centre only needs to come out. The rim stays. If you find yourself removing the rim regularly, it is on the wrong bucket.
The Options

One Lid, Or One Per Bucket?

Most people need one, and it goes on the bucket that stores the kit.

★ RecommendedOne lid Two lids Three lids
Goes on The bucket you store kit in Also the one holding pre-mixed solution All three — wash, rinse and wheels
What you get Clean dry kit between washes, and a seat That, plus mixed product ready to go A sealed, stackable, fully stored set
Right for Almost everyone Anyone pre-mixing wheel cleaner or shampoo Mobile detailers, and anyone storing buckets outside
Cost £11.99 £23.98 £35.97

If you buy one, put it on the bucket your mitts and cloths live in, because that is where a lid changes something. A second earns its place the moment you start pre-mixing. A third is for people moving buckets around or storing them somewhere they get rained on.

Common Questions

Questions About The Gamma Seal Lid

What is a Gamma Seal lid?
It is a two-part bucket lid. An outer rim snaps permanently onto the bucket, and a threaded centre screws into that rim to make the seal. Because the seal is made by the thread rather than by pressing a lid onto a rim, it opens and closes in a couple of turns, which is why people keep using it rather than taking it off once and leaving it off.
Will it fit my bucket?
It fits the Duel detailing buckets, which are 15 inches across the top, and standard 20 litre buckets of matching rim diameter. The rim is designed to stay on permanently once fitted, so put it on the bucket you intend to keep it on. If your bucket is square, tapered differently, or a non-standard size, check the measurement before ordering.
Is it actually watertight?
Yes, when the centre is screwed fully down. That is what makes it useful for pre-mixed shampoo or wheel cleaner, and for moving a bucket with liquid still in it. Test it once with water over a drain before you trust it in a car boot, which is sensible with any sealed container.
Can you sit on it?
Yes, with the centre screwed down. It is a genuinely useful side effect rather than the point of the product: wheels, arches and lower panels are the jobs that put you on the floor, and the bucket is already there. Sit on it rather than standing on it.
What do people actually use it for?
Three things. Sealed storage for mitts, cloths, brushes and bottles between washes, so they stay clean and dry instead of collecting dust in an open bucket. Holding pre-mixed shampoo or wheel cleaner so it is ready next time. And a place to sit while working on the lower half of the car.
Do I need one for every bucket?
No. Most people need one, on the bucket that stores their kit. A second is worth it if you pre-mix product and want it ready, and a third suits anyone moving buckets around or storing them outdoors. There is no benefit to lidding a bucket you only ever fill and empty in one session.
Storage & Care

Storage & Care

Not classified as hazardous under CLP.
Rinse And Dry Before Sealing
Rinse and dry the bucket and anything going in it before you seal it. A sealed damp bucket grows mould faster than an open one.
Keep The Thread Clean
Wipe the thread occasionally. Grit in the thread is what makes a screw lid stiff to open and close.
Fit the rim to the bucket you mean to keep it on. It is designed to stay there permanently.
Do not store chemicals that their own labels require to stay in their original container.
Keep out of prolonged direct sun, which makes plastic brittle over years.
